Year of the Rabbit at Empty Bowls McKinney Texas

This is an artistic challenge for me, painting on ceramic because I am told it takes three repetitive coats of the same color. And well that is not my typical painting norm, and I get so tempted to break those rules but I do not know enough about this medium to push the boundaries. I painted a bowl for this event last year. So when I saw the form of Vicki Gardner’s pottery bowl I chose that one to paint. I knew right away that I wanted to do the Year of the Water Rabbit.

I will share my process in painting the bowl. First I drew my design in pencil. The experts explained to me that it burns off in firing. Again this is not my medium so I followed their directives that I am sharing with you. (Last year I did an abstract and just painted with no pencil lines)

I mixed the paint and also used some of the bisque as the subject. Three layers for each painted part.

The artists reception is a preview party at The Cove in McKinney Texas where artists are photographed with their bowls.

The firing and glazing of the bowl is done by professionals. It is always a surprise to see the colors.

Our event proceeds go to fighting hunger.  In 2022 Empty Bowls McKinney raised $120,000 to fight hunger in our community.

  • We are in unprecedented times and the need for food is great

  • 140,000 Collin County residents are food insecure

  • Nearly 9,000 McKinney kids will go to bed hungry tonight

  • 45% of food stamp recipients are children

You can help and have a fun-filled evening at the same time.

This unique annual event features a showcase of one-of-a-kind bowls handcrafted by professional and student artists. Guests enjoy a sampling of gourmet soups, breads, and sweets prepared by chefs from local restaurants. Each participant takes home a handcrafted bowl as a reminder of those who are hungry in our community.

Proceeds of the event go to Community Lifeline Center to help provide food for their Community Lifeline Market as well as Feeding Friends and Families mobile distributions and to Community Garden Kitchen to serve hot meals to anyone in need, no questions asked.

May 4, 2023 is the Empty Bowls 2023 event. I can’t wait to see who gets the winning bid… oh you can bid for mine online as well. Bid here
